The Boys of Winter - A Free Holiday Short Story

This story was originally part of Literary Escapism's Black Friday event. I'm posting it here for those of you who want more Mike Solo, the hero of CAUGHT BY YOU. Baseball and shopping, what could go wrong ... or right?

THE BOYS OF WINTER

As a professional baseball player, catcher Mike Solo considered the time between the World Series and the start of Spring Training pretty much a wasteland of workouts and off-season trade rumors. Every gray November day, every dark December night brought him closer to the start of the next baseball season, when life began again. And every year, right around Christmas Eve, it sank in that something else happened in the off-season.
Christmas shopping.
Make that Christmas shopping for his entire family of six brothers and sisters, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and lately, little nieces and nephews. Honestly, it was surprising that Chicago had room for the entire Solo family. His list was enormous and his shopping time was running out. In baseball terms, he was down to the last inning and he hadn’t yet gotten a hit.
Time to swing for the fences.
Time to dig deep.
Time to hit the malls.
The last few years, he’d resorted to gift certificates. This year, he was determined to shop for real presents selected with his own two hands. Nothing else would get him to set foot on Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile, a eight-block stretch of pricey boutiques and soaring skyscrapers crammed with department stores.
As he made his way down Michigan Avenue, Mike hunched against the bitter wind blowing off the lake. It felt like icicles slicing through his coat. This was why he’d never been interested in hockey. Give him green grass, blue skies and a sunburned neck any day. He was a baseball guy down to his core.
Much as he detested shopping, Mike had to admit that the city had done a spectacular job decorating the Magnificent Mile. Fairy lights were strung through the bare-branched trees lining the sidewalks. Storefronts offered elaborate displays of gingerbread houses, giant candy canes, evergreen adornments. An early snowstorm had left behind piles of snow, which managed to look festive instead of dingy in the gathering twilight. The sidewalks were thronged with bundled-up shoppers. A fake Santa Claus wandered through the crowds, bellowing, “Ho ho ho” and handing out flyers for the mall.
Mike gritted his teeth and forged down the sidewalk. How hard could this be, anyway? People survived Christmas shopping all the time. If he could hit a knuckleball, he could handle this, right? He scanned the dizzying lineup of stores – Prada, Cole-Haan, American Girl, the Lego Store. Should he get the boys Legos? Or were they a choking hazard at this age? Did his dad need new shoes? Should he blow his entire budget on a single item from Prada? Maybe his sisters could pass it around.
Maybe he should have made a list first. Maybe he should have started before Christmas Eve. Maybe he should go home and admit this was a huge mistake.
He was in the midst of turning back when something whipped through the air toward him.
This, he could handle. He threw up one hand and snatched the flying object before it could hit him.
A snowball.
He spun around to find a skinny boy in a Chicago Bulls jacket gawking at him. “How’d you do that, dude?” the boy asked in amazement. He looked to be about twelve, with a full head of frizzy hair.
“It’s what I do. I’m a catcher.” He tossed the snowball, which was really more of a chunk of dirty ice, back toward the kid. “You know, baseball.”
The boy tried to catch the ice ball, but missed. “I know baseball. It’s my second favorite sport.”
Mike raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess. Bulls fan?”
“This is Chicago, ain’t it?”
Another snowball winged through the air. Mike had to dive for this one. He flung his arm out, snagging it before it could hit the fake Santa just passing by. “Hey,” Mike called to the snowball hurler. “Watch it, will you?”
A second boy skidded down the sidewalk and joined the first one. Slightly younger, he wore torn jeans, high-tops, and glasses held in place by a headband. “Sorry, Mister! I wasn’t aiming at Santa. I was trying to hit my brother.”
The Santa stopped next to Mike and put his hands on his hips. “Got some troublemakers here?”
“No!” Both boys said at one. “We’re chill. We’re not doing nothing bad.”
“Where are your parents?” Mike asked them. “What are you doing out here?”
They exchanged guilty looks. “Mom’s working at the food court in the mall.” The brother in the Bulls jacket indicated Water Tower Place, one of the multi-story megaplexes on the Mag Mile. “We got bored and she told us to come outside and play.”
“She’s working on Christmas Eve?”
“Yeah, Christmas too. It’s okay. She gets overtime.” But Mike could tell it wasn’t okay. Both boys had that long-faced look that meant their holiday season was likely full of disappointments.
Mike exchanged a glance with Santa. Behind the long white beard and little wire-rimmed glasses, he could tell this Santa was on the young side. “I don’t know about you, Santa, but I have a real problem with this situation.” He offered Santa a wink, hoping he’d play along.
Santa nodded and stroked his fake beard. “Young troublemakers throwing snowballs in the middle of Michigan Avenue? Darn right it’s a problem.”
“It’s not that so much. It’s the baseball taking second place to basketball. I’m not okay with that. You a Cubs fan, Santa?”
“White Sox.”
“I can work with that. Hang on.” A sixty-ish woman was walking by, several rolls of wrapping paper poking out of her tote bag. “Ma’am, I’ll give you twenty bucks for one of those tubes.” When she hesitated, he said quickly, “make it fifty.”
With a beaming smile, she handed over a roll of red and gold striped paper in exchange for the cash. Triumphant, he turned back to Santa and the boys. “We have a bat! Now, for a field.” He jogged to a spot across the street where a storefront sat empty save for a “For Lease” sign.
“You.” He pointed to the kid with the Bulls jacket. “You have a pretty good arm. You pitch. Little brother, you’re up first. Santa, how are you at fielding?”
“All-City, two years in a row.”
“Our lucky night.” Mike exchanged a high-five with Santa. “Let’s show these kids why baseball’s the best game in the world.”
Looking around, he realized that the woman with the wrapping paper had stopped to watch, and other shoppers were pausing in their headlong rush down the Mile. In fact, a small crowd had gathered. He crouched over a spot that seemed like a good place for home plate. The kid with the glasses took a few practice swings with the roll of wrapping paper.
“Pitcher provides the balls!” Mike called to the older brother. Laughing, the boy scooped up some snow and packed it into a tight ball.
“Y’all ready for this?” He made an exaggerated show of winding up and flinging the ball toward Mike. The younger boy swung and missed. Mike caught the ball in his mittened hands, where it fell apart in a spray of snow crystals.
“Strike one,” someone called.
A few yards behind the pitcher, Santa clapped encouragement. “Hey, batter batter. You got this.” A few more voices called from the crowd.
“Come on, kid … keep your eye on the snowball … swing, baby, swing …”
The next ice ball must have been more tightly packed, because when the boy swung, the roll of wrapping paper thunked against it and sent it soaring overhead. It shed icy sparkles in the fairy lights twinkling from the trees.
“I got it, I got it,” yelled Santa. The crowd cleared the way for him. He caught it softly against the chest of his red Santa suit. The bystanders erupted into applause.
“Need someone to play first base?” A businessman in a long gray overcoat stepped forward. A little girl bundled into a neon orange parka held his hand.
“Can I bat next, Santa?” she asked eagerly. “I love baseball.”
“Sure thing,” said Santa. “I bet you’re going to knock it out of the park.”
Her face lit up. Mike beckoned her toward the ‘plate.’ The boy with the glasses handed her the roll of wrapping paper, which was nearly as tall as she was. Warm laughter spread through the crowd.
“Hey, I’ll cover the outfield,” said a college-aged kid in a thick hoodie.
Mike gave him a “welcome to it,” gesture. The pitcher packed another snowball and, nice and easy, tossed an underhand throw toward the girl in the orange parka. She whacked it to the ground, where it skipped once, twice, then broke apart.
“Fair ball,” Mike roared.
“Run, sweetheart! Run!” Her father yelled from ‘first base.’ The crowd shouted and whooped as she scurried toward her father. Laughing his head off, the pitcher bent to pick up the remains of his snowball. His younger brother cheered for the little girl as if she’d just gotten a hit in the World Series.
Mike met Santa’s eyes, and they both grinned.
For one enchanted moment, everyone stopped hurrying, stopped worrying about what was left on their shopping lists, stopped racing through Christmas Eve. Everyone forgot about the cold wind and gritty snow. For one moment, summer reigned on the Magnificent Mile as baseball—or was it snow-ball—worked its magic on a random collection of shoppers.
And, best of all, two boys had the time of their lives.
Mike would once again be doling out his traditional gift certificates on Christmas Day. But as he looked around at the shining faces around him, he figured it was worth it.

Deleted scene from CAUGHT BY YOU

When Donna MacIntyre met Mike Solo, they were both side characters in ALL OF ME. At the moment CAUGHT BY YOU begins, they've already known each other the whole season. Which means that the scene in which they meet never got completely written. It wasn't so much "deleted" as "never existed." I fixed that, and here it is for your reading enjoyment! If you've read either book, you might recognize a couple moments. As you'll see, the sparks start flying right away for these two. :-)

Donna MacIntyre wasn’t nearly as buzzed as she was pretending to be. People at the Kilby Roadhouse expected her to play the wild and funny party girl, especially on her birthday. If it helped get her best friend Sadie out of her cubicle of sadness, she’d turn cartwheels across the floor while juggling maraschino cherries with her teeth. Whatever it took.
Bumping into a couple of insanely attractive men with physiques that screamed “athlete” was just a bonus. Even better, the sight of the blue-eyed one had made Sadie nearly drop the two White Russians she’d fetched for them. Verrrry interesting, considering Sadie hadn’t even glanced at a guy since the horrible Hamilton Wade breakup.
“What’s your name, cowboy?” From her perch on one of the tables, Donna flirtatiously touched his leg with her booted foot – it was a test, and it got just the reaction she wanted out of Sadie. If that wasn’t jealousy in her friend’s gorgeous dark eyes, she’d eat her faux-alligator boot.
“Caleb Hart.”
“I’ve heard of you. You’re on the Catfish. I’m Donna and this is Sadie.” No time for subtlety. Sadie’s happiness was too important. “You should really ask her to dance, because even though she’s acting kind of strange right now, she’s super cool. Like, the bestest of the bestest.”
Caleb shot an amused glance at Sadie, who made a little face to indicate Donna’s buzzed state.
Well, guess what, she wasn’t drunk at all. She had a master plan here, and so far it was working. “Besides, she doesn’t go out much anymore.” Donna leaned forward, nearly toppling off the table. “She had a bad experience.”
Okay, maybe she was a tiny bit buzzed.
“Donna.”
“It’s my birthday and I can say what I want. Besides, I can see the sparks flyin’ here.” She waved her hand back and forth between Caleb and Sadie. They both looked kind of stunned by that statement, so when Caleb’s curly-haired friend returned with two Lone Stars, she jumped on the distraction. “And I think your friend’s a hottie, Caleb Hart. I’ve decided to put my money on those cute little dimples.”
“Now that’s an interesting bet,” said Caleb. “We’ll leave you to it. Let’s go, Sadie.” He grabbed Sadie’s free hand and tugged her toward the dance floor. Donna wanted to pump her fist in triumph. A sexy ballplayer was just what Sadie needed.
Caleb’s friend looked down at the two beers he held in one big hand, then up at her. He pasted an exaggerated scowl on his face. “Cute little dimples?”
“Adorable. You know what those dimples say to me?”
“Don’t call me cute?”
Quick comeback. She gave him a closer look, noting the mischief in his green eyes and the power in his body. This man was smokin’ hot. “They say you’re as pure as a baby lamb, so you’d better hand that beer this way.” She gave him a cheeky grin.
“Is that right? Well, you’re not the only one who can interpret body language. You know what your smile says to me?”
“I’m just dying to know.”
“It says you prefer drinks with cream.” Flashing a smile, he brushed a drop of liquid off her upper lip. Her mouth dropped open in shock at how quickly he’d gotten the best of her. That never happened. Also, that light touch had done crazy things to her equilibrium. She had to get it back. Flirt, Donna, flirt.
“Maybe I’m flexible and open-minded when it comes to drinks. And other things.”
His eyes darkened to a deep emerald. “Me and my dimples are going to pretend we didn’t hear that. We’re too pure, remember?” He put one bottle on the table and tilted the other to his mouth, which brought her attention to his broad chest and powerful shoulders.
She swallowed hard, taking a sip from her White Russian to hide her strong attraction to him. “I’m trying to remember. But the rest of you makes it hard. Are you a ballplayer too?” He certainly had the body for it. Not just because of his muscles, but the confidence with which he carried himself.
“I am. Mike Solo, catcher.” He extended his hand, and they shook.
“Donna MacIntyre. Flirt.”
He laughed at that, his eyes dancing. “You don’t fool me. There’s a lot more to you than 'flirt.'”
“How would you know? Something else you read in my smile?”
“No. I saw the way you got Caleb and Sadie to go off together. A real flirt wouldn’t do that. You’d want the star pitcher of the Catfish all to yourself.”
She shrugged. “So I’m a good friend. Anyway, maybe I wanted you instead of him.”
He cocked his head, considering. “Maybe. Except you didn’t even notice me at first.”
“So … you noticed whether or not I noticed you?”
“A-ha.” He gestured at her with his beer bottle. “Very coherent. You’re not nearly as tipsy as you want people to believe.”
That can be fixed.” Alarmed by his perceptiveness, she drained the rest of her White Russian. “Ta-da. By the way, I totally noticed you. I just didn’t think you were interested.”
Something sparked in those green eyes of his. “What made you think that?”
“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “Just something I picked up on. You’re here with your friends, you’re having fun, drinking, hanging out, but you’re not looking for anything. You didn’t set off my play-dar.”
“Play-dar?”
“My play-dar helps me spot a player from two hundred yards.”
His burst of laughter lit up his face. “You should patent that. You’d make bank.”
“I’m right, aren’t I?” She wasn’t sure if she wanted to be right or wrong. If anyone would tempt her, it would be catcher Mike Solo.
“As a matter of fact, you are, at least for now. It’s the baseball season,” he said as if it explained everything.
She shook her head, not understanding.
“I take a Vow of Celibacy at the beginning of every season. I stick to it until the last out of the last game.”
“A Vow of Celibacy? You mean, like a monk?”
“Yep.” He took another swig from his beer. “I pour all my energy into baseball. No distractions. No drama. It’s great for my concentration. According to my calculations, it adds an extra fifty points to my batting average.”
“Wow.” She eyed him, fascinated. This was the most intriguing conversation she’d ever had at the Roadhouse. “So you haven’t had sex since … when, Opening Day?”
“Spring Training, actually.”
“So if I invited you back to my place and told you every naughty thing I’d like you to do to me, you’d say …”
His eyes darkened and his Adam’s apple moved up and down the strong column of his throat. “I’d say you’re trying to kill me.”
Damn. Now he was even more tempting than he had been before he’d revealed his Vow.
“You know, as a public service, you should be less attractive,” she told him. “Get a mullet. Or wear those shiny, baggy sweats. And a wife-beater. It’s only fair, if you’re going to be off-limits.”
“Sorry, you lost me at attractive. After that all I heard was blah-blah-blah.”
They both burst out laughing. Somehow it felt as if she’d known him much longer than the approximately ten minutes since they’d met. “So you’re a hottie who won’t put out, and I’m a flirt who just wants my friend to have fun. We’re quite a pair, aren’t we?”
He clicked his beer bottle against her empty glass. “To us.”
“To us,” she echoed, then slid off the table she’d been perched on. He caught her arm to help her, setting every nerve ending on that side of her body aflame.
He put his hand in the small of her back and guided her through the crowd toward the bar. Hmm, she wondered, her mind filled with images of Mike’s laughing green eyes and hard body. Just how long did the baseball season last?

Christmas at the Firehouse ~ A Bachelor Firemen Short Story

 Christmas at the Firehouse

A Bachelor Firemen Short Story

Photo courtesy of Bill Bailey, The Calhoun Chronicle

The sexy, smoldering “Bachelor Firemen” of San Gabriel were usually seen in turnouts, SGFD t-shirts, or without any shirts at all. But on a day shortly before Christmas, Station 1 was awash with Santa gear as the firefighters competed for a role only one could play.

“Why shouldn’t a woman be Santa? We’ve never had a female Santa.” Sabina Jones wore a Santa hat that kept falling over one eye, probably because it belonged to her husband, Chief Roman, who had the build of a gladiator.

“Only one person here has the belly to be Santa.” Double D patted his stomach, which always grew a few inches around the holidays, what with all the baked goods the citizens of San Gabriel kept dropping off at the firehouse.

“Santa Claus isn’t about the belly.” Vader, the fittest guy on the crew, shouldered his way to the front of the small knot of firefighters. “It’s about personality. Kids love me. I’m like a superhero to them. Fire-Man to the rescue.” He struck a pose, his open Santa jacket exposing his bulging muscles.

Fred Breen snorted. “Santa isn’t a superhero, Vader. He’s the spirit of Christmas, meaning peace and joy and giving. I should play Santa. I get along great with kids. For six years I played an elf in the San Gabriel Christmas pageant. Beat that, superhero.”

“Then again, Santa is called Father Christmas, and I’m the only father here,” said Captain Brody proudly. As the first Bachelor Fireman to tie the knot, he savored his new role as dedicated family man.

“Fine, pull the Dad card,” grumbled the station heartthrob, Ryan Blake. “I’m the one who should be Santa, because I never had a decent Christmas in my life before I came here.”

“Hey, if that’s the standard, I’m your front-runner,” said Dean Mulligan, the newest member of the crew. “But I’m not in the running,” he added quickly. “Unless you want to scare kids away from the fire truck. Then I’m your man.” No one argued with that. Mulligan’s broken nose and tough guy attitude were catnip to the ladies, but probably wouldn’t make for the best Santa.

“This is ridiculous,” declared Sabina. “While we’re standing here arguing, who’s going to pack all the gifts into the rig? Or string the twinkle lights? Or hang the wreath on the front of the engine? The truck has to be ready to roll by six.” Their traditional delivery of Christmas gifts to families across San Gabriel was scheduled for that evening. The crew had been collecting presents for weeks, and the community had been pitching in with enthusiastic generosity. Everyone loved the Holiday Fire Truck -- perhaps the crew most of all.

“Brody, you decide,” said Fred. “We’ll go with whoever you say.”

Amid a chorus of agreement, Brody surveyed the firefighters, with their motley array of Santa adornments. “Hmmm … well, it’s a tough choice. I know you’d all make great Santas. You’re all kind, you’re all generous, you’re all good-hearted. But since we can only have one Santa, I’m going to say—”

“Ho ho ho!” A booming voice interrupted Brody. A huge, broad, white-bearded man strode into the training room. He wore a red velvet suit with white trim – classic Santa attire. A profusion of white hair covered most of his face, and a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles balanced on his nose. “Merry Christmas!”

The crew stood frozen to the spot. No one seemed to recognize this Santa. Stan the Dog zipped out of the captain’s office, where he’d been napping. Overcome with excitement, he jumped up and down on his hind legs, a trick no one had ever seen him do before. They all watched in amazement. When they looked up from the little beagle, the strange Santa had disappeared.

“Was that Joe the Toe?” Mulligan asked, referring to a fireman at the Porter Ranch station. “He’s the only guy I know that size.”

“Pretty good makeup job it if was,” said Vader.

Brody shook off the spell. “Come on, let’s catch up to him. He strode down the corridor, the others following in his wake. When he reached the entrance to the apparatus bay, where the pumper, truck and engine were housed, he stopped short. The others piled up behind him. “What the …?”

Engine 1 radiated color cast from twinkle lights that outlined every door, every compartment, every sleek line of the rig. Soft pools of glowing light, orange and red and green, filled the garage. Fresh pine scented the space -- thanks to the giant wreath adorning the engine’s grille. And inside …

Oh my.

The firefighters ran to the engine door and peered inside at piles of brightly wrapped presents of every size and shape, wrapped in gold or green paper with red velvet bows, with shrink-wrapped candy canes sprinkled here and there.

“Wow,” breathed Vader.

“Who did this?” Fred whirled around. “”Where’d that Santa go? I was in here half an hour ago and this rig was empty.”

“I bet Porter Ranch sent a whole crew over here to do this. That must have been Joe the Toe,” said Ryan Blake.

They all ran into the street, while Vader called Joe on the phone. “Joe’s with his family in Boston,” he informed the crew. “Everyone spread out. We have to find that Santa!”

But as hard as they looked, no one ever saw any sign of the huge man in the Santa suit. No other station in town – and no other fire department in Southern California – ever confessed to the deed.

But the children of San Gabriel had a wonderful holiday season, as did the Bachelor Firemen. When the crew spoke of it in later years, it was in hushed tones, and with the general agreement that it had definitely, without a doubt, been the best firehouse Christmas prank ever.

Unless it wasn’t …

Wishing you a fire truck full of joy, peace and holiday cheer!

Cookies + Kisses, New Release + Giveaway!

www.tawnyweber.com

Hello everyone, and welcome to San Gabriel Fire Station 1, where the holiday season is in full swing -- though not everyone is happy about that.

Mulligan surveyed the shabby, workaday training room, now lit with twinkle lights and scented with spruce boughs. “It’s not even Christmas yet. Why are we doing this?”
“Christmas is in two days. When are we supposed to do it?” Vader Brown, the new captain of the engine company, gripped a steaming mug of coffee in his enormous fist.
“Don’t ask Mulligan that,” Sabina answered, strolling in from the kitchen with a red-and-green-iced doughnut. Mulligan used to have a crush on her, but he hadn’t thought about her that way lately. Not since he and Lizzie had started their . . . whatever it was. “Mulligan’s the original Scrooge. He actually said we should ban Christmas for safety reasons.”
“Christmas lights . . . electrical hazards . . . family stress . . . it’s a nightmare. Ask any suicide hotline..” Mulligan headed into the kitchen to pour himself a mug of coffee. “Oooh, cookies.”
“Don’t touch those,” Fred warned. “A lady wearing an elf costume brought them in. You might get Christmas fever.”
Mulligan popped a fudge cookie—the least Christmassy of the choices—in his mouth. “An elf costume. Like, a hot elf?”
Sabina rolled her eyes, while Vader made a “little bit” gesture with his fingers. Stan, the firehouse dog, trotted into the room. His head drooped under the weight of felt reindeer antlers.
“Who did that to poor Stan?” Mulligan demanded, nearly choking on the rest of his cookie.
Yes, firefighter Dean Mulligan has a few issues with Christmas. But little does he know, as he consumes his cookie, that he's about to go through one of those miraculous experiences that change your life forever. If you've ever seen the movie "It's a Wonderful Life," then you know what I'm talking about.

The entire story unfolds in IT'S A WONDERFUL FIREMAN, which is out today in ebook format (only .99), and will be out on December 23 in paperback.

Hard-edged fireman Dean Mulligan has never been a big fan of Christmas.  Twinkle lights and sparkly tinsel can’t brighten the memories of too many years spent in ramshackle foster homes.  Although he’s established himself as one of the top firefighters at San Gabriel Station 1, he doesn’t think he’s good enough for someone like gorgeous Lizzie.
Lizzie Breen is used to fighting—from her alpha male brothers who try to smother in the name of safety to the childhood life-threatening illness she overcame.  She knows what she and Mulligan feel for each other is a lot more than a fling, but she can’t get him to see that.  The only gift Lizzie wants to give him this season is her love, but he’s not willing to accept it.
When Mulligan is trapped in the burning wreckage of a holiday store, a Christmas angel arrives to open his eyes. But is it too late? This Christmas, it’ll take an angel, a determined woman in love, and the entire Bachelor Firemen crew to make him believe … it is indeed a wonderful life.
To celebrate, I'm giving away a download of any previous book, full-length or novella, in the Bachelor Firemen series! Start at the beginning or fill in a gap, it's up to you. Since we're also celebrating Tawny Weber's new Cookies and Kisses Cookbook (yum!), I'll also give away a Bachelor Firemen Season's Greeting mug.
All you have to do is tell me what your favorite holiday treat is. Is there something you look forward to every Christmas? I'll pick a winner on Thursday, December 4.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - Alaska-style

One of my lovely readers challenged me in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and silly me, I decided -- what a great opportunity to involve my hometown firefighters at Kachemak Emergency Services. I should have seen this coming, since I know how much firefighters like to have fun. Boy, did they get into it! They came up with the crazy idea you're about to see and got a bunch of ice donated by Alaska Ice.

So here's a little taste of how we do things in Alaska -- big and cold.

As you can see, we had fun with it. Greg and Nick from KES Station 1 were awesome. They were so great that I double-donated to ALS.net by way of thanks.

And by the way, I know it looks like I was only under the water for a moment ... but it felt like forever!! That slo-mo section is exactly how it felt to me. Maybe even slower.

Have you taken the Challenge or made a donation to ALS.net? I know many people are tired of seeing the videos in their Facebook feeds and the concept may seem ridiculous to some. But ALS is such a terrible disease that I believe we should do everything possible to fight it. So I was happy to be challenged, happy to donate, and happy to make a fool of myself on video. The goodlooking firemen were just a bonus. :-)

Cover Reveal and a Big Giveaway

Are you ready for the most enchanting, sigh-worthy Bachelor Firemen cover yet? When I first saw the cover for Fred's story, I wanted to wrap myself in it like a blanket of stars. I still do.

Daring . . . Sexy . . . Irresistible . . .
They're the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel

When fireman Fred Breen rescues a bachelorette party after a construction crane collapses onto their limo, the media labels him the "Bachelor Hero." But all Fred can think about is the petite brunette with the sexy mane of dark curls who bolted away from him faster than a wildfire after he carried her to safety. And when he discovers she's none other than Rachel Kessler, the daughter of a tech billionaire, the girl whose kidnapping riveted the nation, he intends to learn every intimate detail about this intriguing woman who sets his pulse on fire.

Rachel can't deny the lean-muscled firefighter is smokin' hot. But after having one too many drinks at the bar where she first meets him, Rachel knows she's made a fool of herself. Yet when he rescues her from the limo, she feels safe for the first time since she was held for ransom as a child. Then her overprotective father insists Fred be her bodyguard—and his close presence kindles a burning desire that only he can extinguish.

Wallflower Week: "Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner"

In honor of the wonderful Maya Rodale's newest book, Avon Romance has declared it to be Wallflower Week. It's about time wallflowers got their own week. To me, they aren't the girls nobody will dance with. They're the girls who are different, who don't quite fit in. I love wallflowers, maybe because I love people who stubbornly cling to their own uniqueness, no matter what pressure they're under to be like everyone else.  To me, the classic wallflower storyline will always end with the wallflower finally being seen and loved for her own enchanting and irreplaceable individuality.

So who is my favorite wallflower? Here she is: Frances "Baby" Houseman in the movie Dirty Dancing.

I've seen this movie probably fifty times, and I never get tired of it. Her older sister is the "popular" one, the one who does exactly what's expected of her. Baby herself is just starting to figure out what she cares about, and how she wants to live her life. The movie is about so much more than dancing. It's about injustice, and hypocrisy, and class inequality. Most of all, it's about a young woman discovering how much power she has when she finally claims center stage -- on her own terms.

So let's hear it for wallflowers! Who's your favorite? More importantly, how many times have you seen Dirty Dancing? ;-)

(Moment of silence for Patrick Swayze, who was smart enough to know that "Nobody puts Baby in a corner." Wallflower motto, perhaps?)

Free Short Story: FALLING FOR THE FIREMAN

FALLING FOR THE FIREMAN

A Bachelor Firemen Short Story

“As you all know, a fashion magazine camera crew is coming to the firehouse today.” Captain Brody looked about as happy as a cavity-ridden kid at the dentist’s office, but the firefighters of San Gabriel Station 1—all three shifts--broke out in a cheer. It took no more than a brief scowl to make the applause stop. “Ground rules. No talking to the models. No flirting with the models. No handing over phone numbers to the models. You stand where the photographer tells you, we get this thing done, and life goes back to normal.”
Matt McBride couldn’t help himself. His mother had always said – yelled, really – that he was born to make mischief, and nothing in his life so far had proved her wrong. He raised his hand. “Excuse me, Cap, but exactly how rude do you want us to be? Just so we can be properly prepared for all scenarios.”
“Excuse me?”
“Like, for instance, what if a model tries to talk to us. Let’s say I’m the model, and Vader’s Vader.” He turned to the big muscleman firefighter next to him and spoke in a falsetto. “Oooh, Vader, you’re so hunky and fine. Want to hang out tonight? I’m afraid my hot tub’s going to catch fire and I’d looooove to have a man with a big hose nearby.”
Vader looked disgusted. “Like I haven’t heard that line before.”
“You say, ask the Captain,” said the Captain sternly, his charcoal eyes glinting dangerously. No one messed with Captain Brody in that mood. “Anyone talks to you, refer them to me. I’m serious. I fought against this shoot, but a donation to Widows and Orphans goes a long way. I want no disruptions. McBride, that especially applies to the B-Shift, since you’re on duty. You’re extras in this gig, but you’re firefighters first. A call comes in, shoot’s off. You talk to a model, you’re off the shoot. Those are my ground rules. Understood? Now go suit up.”
As the firefighters dispersed, Matt spoke out of the side of his mouth to Patrick Callahan, AKA “Psycho,” the blue-eyed wild man of Station 1 and his closest friend on the A-shift. The two of them had cut quite a swath through the female population of San Gabriel. “Bet you a soda they’re going to want us shirtless.”
“Anything for the cause,” said Psycho piously. “Anything for the cause.”
Fred, known ironically as “Stud,” caught up to them just before they reached the apparatus bay. “I told my little sister Lizzie we’re going to be in Cosmo, and she just about died. She threatened to rip her braces off if I don’t get Bianca’s autograph.”
“Who’s Bianca?” asked Matt.
“She’s … she’s world-famous and … and enchanting and she’s the star model who’s coming. Don’t you guys know anything?”
Matt clapped him on the shoulder. “That’s why we have you, Stud. Keep us up to date on all the important and enchanting stuff.”
Fred refused to laugh. Worry creased his endearingly boyish face. “How’m I supposed to get her autograph when the Captain said no talking?”
“You hand her a pen and paper and let her figure it out. Pretend you’re a deaf-mute.” Matt winked at Psycho, who chuckled and shook his head.
“Really?” Fred frowned. “That sounds a little dishonest.”
Vader strode past them on his way to his locker. “Show up at her hotel and buy her a drink. That’s what I’d do. Her and a couple of her friends. Models travel in packs. And they never say no to champagne.”
Seeing the stark terror on Fred’s face, Matt came to his rescue.
“As if she’d be staying in San Gabriel,” he said. “Celebrities like that, they don’t stay in normal places. They have, you know, supersonic jets and floating hotels that whisk them from one town to another, and assistants whose entire job is to keep specks of dirt off their clothes …” As usual, his imagination ran away with him. He’d always loved to spin a good story.
Vader shrugged one huge shoulder. “Whatever you say, Nessie.”
Matt grimaced. The guys called him Nessie for two reasons. One, he was born in Scotland, and two, he’d once pretended for a solid month that he’d been raised by the Loch Ness monster. Big mistake, that one.
Vader continued. “Besides, I happen to know the entire crew, including the models, are staying at the White Flower Inn. I know a chick who works there. They booked the whole place. Stacy says they practically strip-searched her when she went in to work.” He looked thoughtful. “We did a re-enactment. Didn’t seem so bad to me.”
“There you go, Stud.” Matt squeezed Fred’s shoulder. “All it takes is a strip search and a massive dose of rejection from a pack of models, and that autograph is yours.”
Fred looked a little ill, but at that moment all teasing stopped as a long tone echoed through the station. The dispatcher’s voice followed.
Reported structure fire for Engine 1, Truck 1, Battalion 4, Paramedic Squad 3. 1White Flower Lane, Incident 51, time of alarm 9:22.”
In shock, the firefighters all looked at each other. “That’s the freaking Inn!” Vader yelled. “I gotta call Stacy.”
The sound of the other B-shift firefighters running into the apparatus bay snapped Matt from his paralysis. He was on shift. Right. He grabbed his helmet and face piece from his locker.
“We’ll hold down the fort here.” Psycho tossed him his jacket. “Go save some models."
